Hedgerow
According to the Woodland Trust there are over 1/2 million miles of hedgerow in the UK. They are a wonderful feature of our landscape, but they also clean the air, provide food and shelter for wildlife, capture carbon and reduce flooding.
They need protecting because in the last 70 years we have lost over 20% of hedgerow to intensive farming and housing developments.
This series of paintings is very loosely based on hedgerows. I live in Frome a small town in East Somerset. We are surrounded by countryside and I spend many hours walking my dog and enjoying the changing seasons. I love looking at flowers in the hedgerow throughout the year.
We have also planted hedgerows in our small garden, the birds and insects love it. And, it offers us privacy, beauty and a shelter for wildlife. In Somerset, someone who looks after hedges is called a Hedger.
If you want to plant one too, however small these are some of the species I chose and look amazing:
Malus sylvestris-common crab apple,
Fagus sylvatica-Beech,
Viburnum lantana-the Wayfaring Tree,
Viburnum opulus- the Guelder rose, and
Crataegus monogyna - Hawthorn or the May Tree.
We have underplanted thiem with wildflowers such as: Ox-eye daisies, Geranium, Knapweed and honeysuckle.
The following paintings are my interpretation of the energy and beauty in hedgerows all year round.
