How to commission art
Commissioning art may be something you have never done, but I aim to make it a collaborative
and enjoyable experience. Here is how I approach it.
and enjoyable experience. Here is how I approach it.
- You have already seen my work, maybe here on my website, maybe you have seen some work at an exhibition. You may have bought work from me already.
- First we will have a conversation on the phone to discuss size and budget. Once you are happy with this we can talk about what sort of painting you would like, where it needs to hang, size colours, feel. You might want to send me some pictures of a place you love, although I prefer to visit somewhere before I paint it in order to breathe some soul into it. By visiting I can understand the energy, the light and the specialness of a place. You may want something that doesn't exist, say you love autumn scenes or beach scenes and just want that. Or, you may want a painting to fit in with your decor, that is more abstract. Then we need to discuss colours and even swatches to help with the process.
- I ask for a deposit of 30% of the final painting price to cover materials.
- Then I will research, or visit sketch out some ideas in oils on paper. I will then share these with you and ask your view on these. Remember, these are rough ideas to check we are thinking along the same lines. But I do ask that you allow me my artistic license, after all that is why you chose me.
- Once we have agreed this I will start the full painting. I will share work in progress in order for you to feel part of the process and welcome your feedback.
- When I am finished I will show you the final piece, by now, as we have worked together I hope you will be happy with the artwork. So far, every collector has been over-joyed. But, there is something that is not quite right, it is not too late to change it.
- That's it. Payment is made and it is yours. If you want it framed, that can be arranged, but it is may be better for you to choose a frame to suit your home. Or if it is a stretched canvas you can choose to leave it unframed.
- Then you can take it home and enjoy your unique art for a lifetime.
